This past weekend, the Aggies played their first game back from the road trip against UC Santa Cruz. It was UCSC's very first game as a hockey club, which is exciting for their school. The game against them featured some outside players joining UCSC to support their new roster, including UC Davis alumni Kaleb Klauber, Josh Nelson, and Jakob Loke. The game had a light-hearted mood to it, and the Aggies had no problem scoring lots of goals. Even goaltender Niklas Braun suited up to play forward, and scored his first ever goal as an Aggie. With Michael Bodamer in net, the Aggies cruised to a 12-3 victory.
The next night would not be such an easy task. UCD traveled to Redwood City to take on Santa Clara for the third time this season. Both of the first two games ended in Santa Clara's favor, so the Aggies looked to reverse that trend. Santa Clara University was ready for the Aggies, scoring 4 goals in the first period to go up 0-4.
After the Aggies locked it down, it was a dog fight both ways of the ice. Neither team yielded an inch of space, and shot after shot pelted each team's goaltender--and not to mention a multitude of post shots that bounced out. Frustratingly, the Aggies couldn't convert on a number of close calls and the score remained 0-4 after two periods.
The story continued in the third period, with both teams playing disciplined hockey to keep the game even. Eventually, Davis would break through with a goal from Aidan Scott to get the Aggies on the board. With little time remaining, however, it was all the Aggies could muster, and they fell 1-4.
This coming weekend, the Aggies will play arch rivals Santa Rosa JC in back to back games, with the latter deciding the PCHA champion of the year. It will be a tell-all weekend for sure.
